Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common Yamaha outboard and marine questions from our expert technicians.

A beeping alarm when your Yamaha motor is in neutral means that your motor has detected water in the fuel at the filter located under the cowling. This alarm goes away when the motor is shifted into forward or reverse but your gauge may continue to display the "Water in Fuel" message. This alarm differs from the Low Oil Pressure and Overheat alarms which are a constant tone and do not go away when the motor is shifted into gear. Low Oil Pressure and Overheat alarms will also be accompanied by a reduction of RPM to protect the motor.
The correct propeller for your motor and boat combination will be the one that allows your motor to achieve 5500 or more RPM at wide open throttle. Different pitches and diameters can greatly affect the performance of your motor so it is important to work with your dealer to find the one that allows the motor to get full RPM.
For the majority of Yamaha Outboards the break in procedure is very simple and outlined in the Operation section of your Owners Manual. This will include an hour at 2000RPM or approximately half throttle followed by an hour at around 3000RPM or just barely on step. After that you may operate your motor normally. After 20 hours of operation your motor should be fully broken in and will be due for an initial change of oil, filter, and gear oil. For larger motors in the 4.2L, 4.3L, and 5.6L displacements with plasma fused cylinder liners, please consult your dealer for specific instructions for break in.
No, this is not a good idea. The flush adapter on the side of your motor is designed for fresh water flushing only and does not provide adequate water flow to the water pump to prevent damage. If you want to run your outboard at home it is best to use either the "ear muffs" on the lower unit or fully submerge the lower unit in a tote of water to allow water flow through the water pump.
Nizpro is a software upgrade to the ECU or brains of your outboard. Nizpro software is designed to allow your motor to reach its full potential. This includes an increase in available horsepower and RPM as well as improving fuel economy in most cases. If your boat is not near one of our shops, you can mail your ECU to us and we can mail it back the next day.
